Parathyroidectomy: what it is, when it is recommended, and what recovery is like
Parathyroidectomy is a specialized surgical procedure that involves the total or partial removal of the parathyroid glands, which are responsible for regulating calcium metabolism in the body. At the Center for Excellence in Head and Neck Surgery (CEXCA), we perform this procedure using advanced techniques and a human-centered approach, always prioritizing the patient's safety and quality of life.
What are the parathyroid glands and what do they do?
The parathyroid glands are four small structures located at the back of the thyroid gland. Their main function is to produce parathyroid hormone (PTH), which is responsible for maintaining adequate levels of calcium in the blood and bones.
When these glands are affected by disorders such as tumors or hyperparathyroidism, they can cause symptoms such as:
- Bone and muscle pain.
- Extreme fatigue.
- Frequent kidney stones.
- Bone fragility and osteoporosis.
When is parathyroidectomy indicated?
- Surgery is mainly recommended in cases of:
- Primary hyperparathyroidism (abnormal increase in PTH).
- Growth of one or more glands that does not improve with medical treatment.
- Suspicion of malignant tumor in the parathyroid glands.
- Complications resulting from high blood calcium levels.
How is parathyroidectomy performed?
- It is performed under general anesthesia.
- The incision is made in the lower part of the neck, following a natural crease to reduce the visibility of the scar.
- Depending on the case, one, several, or all of the parathyroid glands may be removed.
- Hospitalization is usually short (1 to 2 days).
- Recovery after surgery
After a parathyroidectomy, it is important to have regular blood calcium checks. Some patients may require temporary or permanent replacement medication.
At CEXCA, we are the only center in Colombia specializing in head and neck surgery. If you have symptoms related to the parathyroid glands or have been recommended for a parathyroidectomy, schedule your evaluation with our specialists.
