This surgery involves the total or partial removal of the submandibular gland, depending on the type of disease.
The submandibular gland is unique on each side of the neck. It is located below the jaw and toward its lateral portion. Its function is to produce saliva, which facilitates chewing, swallowing, and speaking.
The incision for submaxillectomy is transverse and is made below the jaw. On average, it is 3-5 cm long, but this may vary depending on each particular case.
