LARYNGECTOMY
LARYNGECTOMY
This surgery involves the total or partial removal of the LARYNX depending on the type of disease, and in some cases it may be necessary to remove other adjacent organs such as the pharynx, the base of the tongue, or the thyroid gland.
The larynx is the organ of phonation (voice production) and is unique. It is located in the lower central part of the neck and corresponds to the Adam's apple. Its function is to produce the voice. The incision for laryngectomy is U-shaped and runs from a point behind the ear down to the base of the neck and back to the same point on the opposite side. On average, it is 15-20 cm long, but this can vary depending on each particular case. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. It is always necessary to leave a drainage tube in place for 2-3 weeks to prevent fluid accumulation at the surgical site. Hospitalization is 7-15 days in most cases, and the stitches are removed 10-15 days after surgery.
This surgery is only performed in cases of cancer, and the goal is to remove the entire tumor. This is expected to prevent the tumor from growing and spreading to the lymph nodes in the neck or other parts of the body. In some cases, it is necessary to supplement the treatment with radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
