PAROTIDECTOMY

This surgical procedure involves the total or partial excision (removal) of the parotid gland, depending on the type of disease.

The parotid gland is singular on each side of the face. It is found above the jaw and in front of the ear. Its function is to produce saliva, which helps in chewing, swallowing and speech functions.

The parotidectomy is performed through a vertical incision which extends to below the jaw. On average, it measures 8-10 cm in length but may vary according to each case. The outermost part (superficial lobe) or the entire gland can be removed. Simultaneously with the removal, a graft of a nearby muscle is performed to cover the Facial nerve and attenuate the aesthetic defect.

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. It is always necessary to leave a drainage tube for 2-5 days, to prevent the operated site from accumulating fluids. The procedure is ambulatory in most cases, and the stitches are removed between the eighth and tenth day after surgery.
